Behind the Scenes: Train-The-Trainers Session with Kevin Godber

Hi Kevin! Thanks for coming to our Train-The-Trainers session! How did you enjoy it?

I loved the session. The whole team at Roarockit was so welcoming, skilled, and helpful! There should be many more teachers taking this session.

What inspired you to take the Teacher Training class?

I have seen other schools making longboards and having a very successful program. I wanted to learn how to make the boards using the best possible materials and using vacuum pressing technology. I looked at Roarockit on the internet many times in the past and have had students who were interested in your process – but they didn’t want to commit to the product until they knew it worked. I also wanted to learn from the experts so that I could pass along best practices for making skateboards.

Have you ever used Roarockit products before? How did you find out about us?

I found out about you by doing an internet search for skateboard veneer. This is my first experience with Roarockit.

What did you learn? How will you implement this into the program you are planning to start?

I intend to implement this into my program in the next couple of weeks (three weeks after taking the session). I have approximately 25 students who wish to make boards this year!

What was your favourite part of the day?

All of it! (not a very helpful answer – but that is the truth).

Can you tell me a little about yourself?

I teach STEM (including a lot of woodworking) to Grade 9-12 students. I am passionate about giving students opportunities to learn, produce good projects, and experience success. I believe that we learn through playing and trying things. I love the outdoors and outdoor sports (although I don’t actually skateboard).

I have been woodworking for most of my life and have been teaching it in school for about 5 years. Previous to that I was teaching Chemistry and Physics for about 20 years.

Any advice for aspiring board builders and woodworkers out there?

Just try it! Celebrate your successes and learn from your mistakes.

Would you recommend the Train-The-Trainers session to other educators looking to start teaching skateboard building?

I recommend it wholeheartedly. You can have teachers that are thinking of taking the session contact me and I can tell them about my experience. They can email me at godber@tdchristian.ca.

Thanks again Kevin! We can’t wait to see how your students boards turn out.
