Behind the Build: All that Glitters is a "Bad Influence"

This board is an intensely colourful portrait of a student who collaborated with glitter artist Alexa Trilli. The entire surface of this skateboard sparkles! Trilli is well-known for her custom portraits of celebrities and musicians such as Paris Hilton and Drake.

The portrait on this skateboard is all about Shiloh, a student at the Oasis Skateboard Factory. Bad Influence is Shiloh’s Personal Brand. Creating a Personal Brand is a mainstay subject that teachers Lauren Hortie and Craig Morrison introduce early in their program at this TDSB Alternative school in downtown Toronto. The board was part of an art exhibition at the end of the school year.

Shiloh says that his brand, coupled with Kanye West’s song “Good Morning” inspired the graphic elements included here. Shiloh writes: “The concept of the board is the miseducation in todays’ youth, how mainstream education kills the creative mind, a graduation cap is a knife to a young artist’s brain.”

Despite the ghoulish deconstruction of the face, the likeness of Shiloh’s image painted here is strikingly accurate. The sparkly jewel tones serve to intensify the energy and good looks that both artist and student show outwardly.

Trilli paints profusely in glitter (and glue), sometimes taking up to 50 hours to complete a piece. She says that there are no rules for working with glitter, and that she enjoys challenging herself with no limits!
