Bonnie Thoe-Austin is a high school shop teacher that uses skateboard building as a way to engage struggling students by applying math to “real life” using the Roarockit method.

My goal for this unit was to show students how timbers could be manipulated into curved shapes and how that might be used in everyday society.

"I have never, in my entire career, had 100% engagement 100% of the time until now.  Simply doing something that the students are truly interested in and is real/relevant to them shows them that they are valued in the classroom. I want them to be active participants in their learning rather than merely recipients of facts. "
